FREDERICK WISEMAN

For its 60th birthday, the legendary Parisian cabaret located in the Golden Triangle, opened its doors to the American moviemaker, Frederick Wiseman. The idea was to lift the veil on the very secretive backstage of the Crazy Horse. The movie was shot during the creation of the “Désirs” show by Philippe Découflé and which celebrated its premier in September of 2009.

Backstage

Frederick Wiseman’s camera recorded the main protagonists of the creative process through the eyes of the magnificent dancers Zula Zazou, Nooka Karamel or Fiamma Rosa amongst others. He also filmed the artistic team, including Ali Mahdavi, at work, and also the managers and costume makers. All these little hands working together for the Crazy-est show of all of Paris!

Revealing fantasies

“I made this movie for several reasons, mainly abstract. I’m very interested in fantasies and they are manifold in the Crazy universe: the fantasies of the audience coming to see the show, the fantasies of shareholders wanting to make money, those of the film director who wants to show what Désir is… I find all these questions very intriguing,” Frederick Wiseman explains. Crazy Horse is his 39th movie.

The Crazy Horse movie will give you a behind the scenes look at this Parisian institution, its codes and its unique take on female beauty, as you’ve never seen it before. It invites the spectator to plunge into the inner workings of this internationally recognized temple of femininity and glamour.

International debut

The feature film hits theaters in October of 2011 and was selected to be screened at film festivals around the globe: Venice (August 31st), Toronto (September 11th), San SĂ©bastian (September 19th), New York (October 3rd), Lisbon (October 20th) and also London and Tokyo.

American filmmaker and documentarian, Frederick Wiseman, had a privileged look at the behind the scenes goings-on of the Crazy Horse. The cabaret is one of three celebrated French institutions that Wiseman fimed. The other two being the Comédie Française and the Ballet de l’Opéra.
