The famous lingerie designer Chantal Thomass will be taking over the Crazy Horse Paris for three months in a show called Dessous Dessus of which she is the artistic director.
She has been asked to create four brand new acts, conceive the costumes and direct the show. She will also be adding her personal touch to the âclassicâ acts of the showâs repertoire.
The designer with the unmistakable bobbed hair, tells us in an exclusive interview how sheâs about to pick up this challenge and put Crazy Horse Paris "Dessus Dessous" (upside down)!
What exactly will that special « Chantal Thomass » touch be in the new show?
Iâve always loved Crazy Horse Paris shows and I really wanted to add my own personal touch and stylistic codes to it. In other words, a bit of impertinence, very much a part of my personality and perhaps a bit different than that which Crazy Horse Paris already possesses. I also had ideas about different and surprising (laughs) acts.
I will also be asking the dancers to wear a bit more clothes than they usually do, but rest assured⊠they will be taking them off!
Discover the making of the show :
In this new role as Artistic Director for Crazy Horse Paris, what are your greatest challenges?
Whatâs completely new to me is⊠that I donât control everything!
For example, the stage is tiny! In the beginning, I had planned on making the dancers wear 50cm high hats, but I quickly became to realize that that would be impossible.
There was also a real adjustment to be made with the costumes. We tried several things where the dancers told me right away âI wonât be able to dance with that on.â It should be noted that they really do move a lot, so itâs a real challenge dressing them.
You have to think of all the little details, just as a director would, itâs very different from a fashion show.
How are the different acts created?
The creative process begins with drawings and sketches that reflect our imagination, our ideas and what we would like to see on stage. Then thereâs a very real adaptation as far as choreography is concerned. I work with a wonderful choreographer, StĂ©phane Jarny, and I donât have a whole lot to say there for he knows his subject way better than I do !
There is also the influence of the different songs and music that will be a part of the show. I want the words of the songs, mostly in French, to fit to the story I want to tell and to the costumes.
What really surprised me in the beginning was that we tried many different pieces of lingerie and some of them are spectacular and youâd think theyâd be the most beautiful, yet they arenât extraordinary on stage. Inversely, pieces that we thought were less interesting turned out to be those that really stood out and even blew us away on stage! You really have to try everything to know, do fittings with the dancers, have them move and dance with the costumes on, in order to be able to imagine what itâll look like in the end.
Weâve still got a lot of work left to do !
How did you get your inspiration and what is it you want for your Crazy Girl costumes?
Iâve tried to tell stories, particularly in the new acts we created. But itâs up to the choreographer to adapt the story Iâm trying to tell. In one of the new acts I really like, there is a swing, makes you think of Marie-Antoinette. And little by little Marie-Antoinette became a rock star !
I wanted to add some glamour and rock ânâ roll. I wanted to add more fantasy and more impertinence. Itâs a word thatâs used frequently in the world of lingerie. But I know that thereâs already a lot of it at the Crazy!
Can you tell us what your favorite Crazy Horse Paris act is?
I really like Leçon dâĂ©rotisme, which will be, by the way, revamped for the occasion (youâll see!). I love the fact that the dancers get undressed. Thatâs incidentally what I tried to add to the show. I find it very erotic and sexy. When a dancer arrives already nude on stag, even if, of course, sheâs drop-dead gorgeous, you donât get this little extra measure of mystery. I also like the Teasing act, which I hadnât seen for some time on Crazy Horse Paris stage⊠and which youâll therefore rediscover in Dessous Dessus !
In your opinion, what is âCrazy âand what isnât?
Crazy to me are the lights and the arched backs, absolute Crazy Horse hallmarks. What isnât Crazy is vulgarity, inappropriate behavior and whatever lacks elegance and style. Thatâs the opposite of Crazy.
Andrée Deissenberg, Crazy Horse Paris General Director Creation and Development, got the idea of entrusting artistic direction of the show to Chantal Thomass and invited her to follow in the illustrious footsteps of great names of fashion and showbiz, such as Christian Louboutin, Philippe Decouflé or more recently Dita Von Teese.
Chantal Thomass at the Crazy Horse Paris⊠what should we expect?
Expect new acts, of course, but also a show âdressedâ differently, fun and impertinent, expect a different way of presenting the Crazy woman, new visuals and surprisesâŠ
Can you give us a sneak-peek into Dessous Dessus ?
We reworked for the first time since 1989 our famous opening act God Save Our Bareskin and realized afterwards that that was perfectly inline with European current affairs⊠just think of Brexit (or should I say « Brâexcite Me » !) ⊠but I shanât say any more, youâll have to discover the rest for yourself at Crazy Horse Paris starting October 5th!
Twice a year, for the spring-summer and fall-winter collections, Paris vibrates with the colors, sequins, and glamour of the biggest annual fashion event, Fashion Week.
Crazy Horse Paris and its shows have always been an inspiration for creators, models, photographers, and celebrities. Follow us behind the scenes of this special relationship with the world of fashion.
A temple to sensuality and femininity, a cozy boudoir full of history and glamour, a jewel case for the most beautiful women in the world, Crazy Horse Paris has always been the privileged place of an artistic effervescence the secret to which only Paris holds.
It is therefore natural that the fashion world keeps Crazy Horse Paris close to its heart, and reciprocally: a relationship of love that has woven close ties ever since 1951.
It all began in the fifties. When Crazy Horse Paris opened its doors, its neighbors were Yves Saint-Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, and Cristobal Balenciaga. The latter, located just next door to the cabaret, feared that his high society clients would not appreciate the decorations done in the purest âsaloonâ spirit, which Alain Bernardin had installed outside. He then received a concession from the creator of Crazy Horse Paris. Bernadin agreed to limit these installations⊠in exchange for dresses for his dancers. And thus the first collaboration of the cabaret with haute couture was born!
A few years later Karl Lagerfeld designed a perfect little black dress with white polka dots for an act inspired by the famous scene of Marilyn Monroe standing over a subway grating blowing air up her dress in âThe Seven Year Itchâ, while in the sixties Paco Rabanne chose Crazy Horse Paris as the setting to present his iconic metal dress.
Very close to Alain Bernardin, the founder of the cabaret, Azzedine AlaĂŻa confessed to having âlearned womenâs bodies at Crazy Horse Parisâ, for which he created sublime dresses for the dancers in the 80s.
In the early 2000s, the âgenius of leatherâ Jean-Claude Jitrois designed clothes in black and silver leather for the dancers of the cabaret.
Later, it was Mark Fast, a brilliant Canadian fashion designer based in London, and the talented Hervé L. Leroux, creator of the legendary bandage dresses under the name of Hervé Leger, who dressed the dancers at gala events.
From 2006, the collaborations intensified and diversified. Deeply inspired by the sophisticated and ultra-feminine universe of the cabaret, one after another, the most iconic fashion designers created unforgettable outfits, imprinted with their DNA, which highlighted the perfect curves and slender profiles of the Crazy Girls and of the invited artists.
From these famous collaborations, mythical relationships are forged between the creators and their muses: Thierry Mugler and Arielle Dombasle (2007) then Pamela Anderson (2008), Elie Saab and Dita Von Teese (2006 and 2009), Roberto Cavalli and Clotilde Courau (2010), HervĂ© Leroux and NoĂ©mie Lenoir (2013), Jean Paul Gaultier and Conchita Wurst (2014), Alexis Mabille and Ralph & Russo and Dita Von Teese (2016). But itâs not only fashion designers who thrill for Crazy Horse Paris: in the next episode discover how creators and celebrities have also made it their source of inspiration or their favorite spot to party!
To accentuate their breathtaking arched backs, the dancers are perched on stilettos, boots and other exceptional footwear. Since 2007, Christian Louboutin has provided the Crazy Girls with his renowned red soles and dizzying heels â his legendary shoes symbolize the height of femininity, fully in step with the essence of Crazy Horse Paris.
As the artistic director of the show Feu in 2012, he created acts immersed in his universe, including the iconic and surprising Voodoo, which was chosen to appear once again on the stage in the current Totally Crazy show.
The Crazy Horse dancersâ curves, emphasized by delicate lingerie, have always inspired corsetieres. Lingerie and corsets, fatal weapons of seduction, are thus created to measure by Poupie Cadolle and Fifi Chachnil, celebrated lingerie designers who share a common passion for the body, refinement and excellence. Not to mention the goddess of chic lingerie, Chantal Thomass, the first woman invited to take on the role of Art Director at Crazy Horse Paris for the show Dessous Dessus in 2016. You can admire her sublime adornments in the numbers Reines des CĆurs and Striptease-Moi, both featured in Totally Crazy.
Are you enchanted by these creations?
Did you know that the beautiful body suit from Reines des CĆurs, custom made for the Crazy Girls by Chantal Thomass, is available exclusively at the Crazy Horse Paris shop?
Crazy Horse Paris inspires photographers (and not just fashion photographers) to give their creativity free rein. The famous Ellen Von Unwerth has shot there several times and her poster design for the Dessus Dessous show by Chantal Thomass is of particular note. Itâs impossible to not also evoke the eclectic Ali Mahdavi and his superb images of the divine Dita Von Teese, Arielle Dombasle, Clotilde Courau and NoĂ©mie Lenoir, which gave rise to magnificent posters for these cabaret âguest starsâ. Youssef Nabil created the poster image for the show Feu by Christian Louboutin, while Pierre and Gilles were the ones behind the show poster with Conchita Wurst draped in a beautiful Jean Paul Gaultier outfit. That photo was then displayed at the Grand Palais in 2015 during the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition. The talented Antoine Poupel and Riccardo Tinelli regularly make photo shoots during the show or in backstage with the Crazy Girls.
The talented Norwegian photographer SÞlve SundsbÞ, who regularly collaborates with magazines like i-D, Dazed and Confused and Vogue, as well as brands like Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, HermÚs and MAC, shot the official image for the show currently on stage, Totally Crazy.
From models to iconic brands⊠Crazy Horse Paris is the place to be!
Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Rosie Huntington-WhiteleyâŠÂ the fashion world is their playground and these sublime models choose to party at Crazy Horse Paris! But top models and muses are not the only ones seduced by the glamorous Crazy Horse Paris â singers, artists, actors and designers go there regularly. Rihanna, Scarlett Johansson, Kanye West, Jay Z and BeyoncĂ©, Dita Von Teese, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lana Del Rey and Robin Thicke are all crazy about Crazy Horse Paris.
The cabaret can also lend itself to the needs and desires of iconic brands and their designers. To name but a few: Balmain chose Crazy Horse Paris for an after-show that has not been forgotten, as did the famous concept store colette, Roberto Cavalli and Philipp Plein. Manish Arora, Fifi Chachnil, the creator of Haute Coiffure Charlie Le Mindu, and the young brand Jour/né have all organized fashion shows on the legendary Crazy Horse Paris stage.
Others, such as Miu Miu, have invited Crazy Horse Paris troupe to perform outside the cabaret at sumptuous evening events with more than 800 handpicked guests. The jeweler Chopard made a big impact by closing its legendary festival at the Cannes Film Festival with a custom-designed show by Crazy Horse Paris entitled âCrazy Diamondsâ.
Creators, designers, fabulous brand names and celebrities participate in the legend of Crazy Horse Paris⊠So who knows who could be sitting in these iconic velvet armchairs next to you when you come to the show!
Before an enthusiastic celebrity audience, Patricia Folly, alias Psykko Tico, choreographer and dancer at Crazy Horse Paris, took to the catwalk at JeanâPaul Gaultierâs Spring-Summer 2011 Couture presentation.
On 26th January 2011, at the fashion houseâs headquarters. Psykko Tico wore the "Can Can" wedding dress specially created for the occasion. A fully embroidered white ruffle dress with a "legs" print under the skirt, bringing a magnificent end to the haute couture show.

The original Crazy Horse cabaret â also commonly referred to as Le Crazy â was founded in 1951 in Paris by Alain Bernardin, an avant-garde artist, passionate admirer of women and the female form. Fascinated by American show girls and the United States in general, he was driven by a single idea: to make artistic creation and women the focus of his cabaret.
Over the years, Bernardin developed a unique and highly recognizable artistic signature. Each of his acts was conceived as a tableau with its own storyline, combining classically trained dancers with perfect, arched bodies dressed primarily in lights, with original choreography, sets, projections, and the latest musical and fashion trends. This artistic signature was rapidly appraised among artists as well as the general public â pleasing women and men alike.
Still today Le Crazyâs rich artistic legacy is recognized and celebrated among artists and designers, with many of whom Le Crazy has collaborated on numerous shows and creative projects, including: Christian Louboutin, Swizz Beatz, BeyoncĂ©, David Lynch, Bob Sinclar, Roberto Cavalli, Ellen von Unwerth, Paco Rabanne, Karl Lagerfeld, Emmanuel Ungaro, CĂ©sar, Kylie Minogue, Azzedine Alaia, Christina Aguilera, Philippe DecouflĂ©, Ali Mahdavi, etc.
After more than sixty years since its inception, Le Crazy continues to reinvent itself and the inexhaustible subject of women and femininity. The cabaret company has diversified its activities and developed its unique brand and know-how far beyond France.

Paris, September 13th, 2016 â Crazy Horse Paris is proud and happy to announce that it has accepted the invitation of Jean de Loisy, artistic director of Nuit Blanche and president of the Palais de Tokyo, to participate in the 2016 edition of Nuit Blanche. This yearâs theme of the popular night-time event: crossings over and, in particular, that of the Seine river and therefore, its bridges.
Held every year since 2002 on the first Saturday in October, the city of Paris organizes this âSleepless Nightâ, in french Nuit Blanche. This yearâs edition will be held on Saturday, October 1st, from 7 p.m. âtil dawn. It is a popular and festive event, art taking center stage in the city, pervading public parks and iconic Parisian monuments and buildings.
In 2016, Nuit Blanche was provide the opportunity to discover the city differently with an itinerary designed such a symbolic cartography, inviting the visitor to participate in a loverâs quest along the Seine, from town hall to the Ăle aux Cygnes and up to the city of tomorrow, the Grand Paris. Nuit Blancheâs leitmotiv, personified by Poliphilo, main character of a 15th century illustrated Italian novel, in which he pursues his love, Polia, in his dreams, only to sadly awaken when he, at long last, manages to conquer her heart. Not unlike him, visitors will be invited to cross dreamlike landscapes, going through inner change and transformation in the process.
In the Petit Palais gardens, a spellbinding encounter soothes Poliphiloâs heart. Just as in numerous passages in the novel, nymphs help our hero by guiding and enthralling him. A flash of light, symbolizing the frontier between where the real world ends and dreams begin, greets visitors as they enter the garden. They discover a magical and bewitching world laid out in lavish 19th century scenery.
Hidden behind peristyle columns, Crazy Horse Paris nymphs seem to have taken shelter in this enchanting place. In the middle of the central pool, their vaporous robes sway gently and they whisper delicately into the visitorsâ ears.
A must-see of Parisian nightlife, Crazy Horse Paris was celebrating 65 years of creation and Parisian chic in 2016. The legendary venue is known for its dancers with dreamlike names, clothed in nothing but lights and mystery. On stage, the Crazy Girls, sensual, beguiling and recalling the legend, are part of the shining stars of Parisian nightlife.
The Crazy Horse Paris, thanks to its reputation and unique know-how on how to beautify women, has always inspired the greatest artists of our time. Ever since 2006, by welcoming creators and artists, from fashion and dance, the cabaret constantly renews itself and its vision of sensuality and femininity.
